Learning overview

At Orchard Primary School the curriculum comprises all the activities that are planned, taught and developed within the school to promote learning and personal growth. Through participating in these activities the children develop intellectually, personally, socially, emotionally and physically. We teach the Foundation Stage Curriculum and National Curriculum offering breadth and depth of educational opportunity to all our children so that they are fully prepared for the future academically, personally and socially.

Teaching and learning is carefully planned to follow appropriate programmes of study for each subject outlined in the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum. It is also understood that the curriculum does not just refer to aspects of the foundation Stage Curriculum and National Curriculum but also the ethos of the school the cross curricular links and the various extra-curricular activities that the school organises to enrich the children’s experiences.

The curriculum also includes the ‘hidden curriculum’ – what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We want children to grow into positive and responsible adults who can work and cooperate with others while at the same time developing their knowledge and skills, in order to achieve at the highest level.

The curriculum as a whole provides the opportunities for pupils to learn and includes opportunities to experience a variety of trips, visits and additional activities such as performances by theatre groups as part of the school curriculum. These opportunities broaden the scope of learning undertaken and give the children relevant experience of the wider world.

We aim in all areas to promote equality of opportunity and community cohesion where contributions and differences are recognised and celebrated.
