In The Orchard Primary School our aim is that all children develop into confident, creative, enthusiastic and independent artists. In order to nurture and grow our “young artists” we want all our pupils to explore, produce creative work and develop an appreciation of art showing their interest and recording their experiences.
They should be able to use a range of materials creatively and develop their techniques through experimentation of different kinds of art, crafts and design. This will include an appreciation of different artists, architects and designers around the world and in our local community.
We also seek to develop within our pupils a real sense of enjoyment, pride and also the ability to evaluate their own work using the language of art. We feel that engaging pupils in their work helps to cultivate a sense of independence. This is achieved through ensuring our units of work not only reflect the national curriculum expectations but also, at times, are aligned to the termly topics and reflect the experiences and backgrounds of our children. We believe that all our artists need to have the ability to reflect, review and refine ideas and skills.
They also should be able to make connections between their own work and other subjects of the national curriculum. The pupils should also know how art reflects and shapes our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
